Okay so Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder were the two big comedies that caught my eye this summer, and I happened to watch Tropic Thunder in theater opening day. TT is a movie directed by Ben Stiller, starring Ben Stiller (yea i know..), Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. The premise of TT is that the three stars are big blockbuster actors on the set of making a war movie called “Tropic Thunder”. They get caught up with real bad guys and hilarity ensues.

I’ll make this review short and sweet. This movie starts out VERY slow. I found myself bored during the first 30 minutes of Tropic Thunder. However, once I got towards the middle of the movie I couldn’t stop laughing. It is a REALLY funny movie. I’ll also mention that I hate Ben Stiller, and the fact that he directed the movie didn’t appeal to me. The saving grace of Tropic Thunder was none other than Robert Downey Jr. He was HYSTERICAL. You might remember Downey from his epic role as Tony Stark aka Ironman. In Tropic Thunder he plays a black stereotypical soldier and is absolutely hilarious. It was worth seeing this in the theater just for Downy Jr, every time he spoke I couldn’t help but laugh.

The plot is stupid and ridiculous, but the plot isn’t very important in this genre. It’s all about the ride and the ride was good. In my opinion Pineapple Express was funnier and more enjoyable, but Tropic Thunder was VERY funny as well. If you could only see one I recommend Pineapple Express and wait for Tropic Thunder to come out on DVD.

It was a Wednesday and the blockbuster hit Pineapple Express had just been released. So me being the avid movie goer (not) decided to go see it by myself. The movie stars Seth Rogan as a man with an addiction to MJ and James Franco as Seth Rogan’s drug dealer lol. The two witness a murder and are being chased by the killers (not the band) throughout the movie. So try to imagine “Fugitive” mixed with “Superbad” and throw in a couple dashes of “Dumb and Dumber”.

I loved this film. I am against drugs and drug abuse but this movie is hilarious. It actually shows the bad effects of drugs on society and how people turn into crazy turds from it. The acting was great. Seth Rogan plays one of the best stoners on the silver screen. If anyone has seen Knocked Up, you know that. Also James Franco was AWESOME. I had such a blast watching him play the role of Saul Silver. The two of them make a hilarious duo.

Of course this is a comedy film, so the main selling point is the comedy. The jokes are hilarious and original for the most part. (At least I found them to be). At my screening there were many middle aged – old men watching Pineapple Express. It was amusing to see them crack up to a lot of ganja jokes. But anyway, great summer comedy. Go watch it. Of course it is Rated R for crude humor and language. So if it’s not your type of movie then go watch The Dark Knight again instead.
